Memorial Peace Garden
As part of Mepham's commemoration of the first anniversary of the September 11th tragedy, the school created and dedicated a Memorial-Peace Garden in the circle on the West side of the building. Because other school activities were scheduled for the 11th, the Garden's dedication took place on September 9th during three assembly programs. The $6500 cost of the garden was donated by the PTA and Alumni Association, and PTA co-presidents Diane Hochauser and Anne Schulman attended, as well as Alumni Association Board Members Jerry and Clare Worthing.
In his address, Principal John Didden asked students "to remember those who are gone and all of our heroes, but also let all that the garden symbolizes... its life, its beauty, its diversity, its peacefulness... refresh and strengthen your spirit and inspire you to strive to always spread hope, acceptance, and peace wherever you go."
As part of Mepham's ongoing beautification efforts, the plan is to expand the garden over the next few years. One phase under consideration is the addition of a brick patio and walkway, financing that part of the project by offering commemorative inscribed bricks.
