The 1941 yearbook states:
“It was no April Fools joke that the band was awarded a first division rating in the regional contest held here at Mepham. As this book goes to press, the band is planning to enter the state completion at Poughkeepsie.”

Fred Langdon, lead trumpet in the band, stated about the Poughkeepsie contest:

“Part of the competition was sight reading The band was set up and Mr. George Pritchard, our teacher, had ten minutes to go over the music we had never seen before. We played it well. The Gods were with us (there were no notes left over), and the band was awarded a #A rating.

“I was fortunate to be in the solo competition, I played “Willow Echoes” (still have the music). Anna Kaiser was my accompanist. I thought it went well but the judges gave us a B+ rating.”
